Remember when Aaron Carter shared the stage with Hilary Duff? Thirteen years later Aaron is back and ready to bring the party to Madison, only instead of Hilary Duff, a local trio gets to make an appearance. Catch Kid are a band based here in Madison made up of front man Nate Rusch, guitarist Jeremy Van Mill and drummer Luke Osiecki. If that name sounds familiar it’s because they were rocking the WSUM stage at Freakfest this past November. I had the pleasure of catching up with these super awesome guys to see what their plans include for 2015—of course covering the upcoming show with Aaron Carter Thursday. The real question is: Who are these guys?

For those of us who grew up with Studio Ghibli’s films, animation has always felt like a safe space. It was a portal to explore the troubled morality of the world without feeling trapped by it. Sure, bad guys do exist—be they big-nosed witches, tree-burning industrialists, or belligerent polities—but by the end they are always vanquished or revealed to be somewhat decent. If hope seemed faint, it would always return by the end.

You know what? I’m sick and tired of all these potheads in Washington who think it’s edgy and cool to legalize dangerous drugs such as the demonic plant cannabis. The Lord Almighty created this abomination 10,000 years ago in order to test our ability to resist temptation. Thankfully, most of us Americans have enough common sense to figure that out. And because we know everything, absolutely, others have no excuse to not follow our rules as well. For all you out there considering changing to a path that doesn’t lead directly into a fiery inferno of infinite misery, listen up, you might actually learn something.

A road trip is more than traveling from point A to B. Like everything around us it can be just that, simply a route to travel to reach somewhere, but sometimes, it can encompass the entirety of American mythology regarding road trips within it and be so much more. It ceases to be a route to get somewhere and takes the form of an adventure, one that takes you on uncharted water and exposes you to unexpected things. There is nothing quite like having the late afternoon sun kissing your face, the wind dancing through your hair and the great expanse of a road in front of you, waiting for you to envelope it. It is the epitome of ways to find yourself at this time in your life, to drive away in your car, alone or with a few friends, and let your mind think and dream in ways you didn’t know were possible. Regardless of the reasons, it will bring you the clarity you so desperately need. Better yet, it will bring you much more.

Don’t Lose This is Roebuck “Pops” Staples latest and last album. With such a developed career, it’s hard to fathom how this man came to be so influential in the music industry. Pops Staples was born on a Mississippi plantation in the 1910s and was the youngest of 14 children. He got involved with local blues guitarists as a young boy and went from a singer to a band leader.

The German philosopher Schiller once said “Mit der dummheit kampfen die Gotter selbst vergebens,” which means “Against stupidity the gods themselves war in vain.” Such could be said about the current attacks by our governor on education in general and the University of Wisconsin in particular. The Governor opined recently that the faculty should just “work harder” while he moves to cut $300 million from the University’s budget.

The enormity of research available at UW-Madison comes as no surprise to the students on campus. The research subjects range from common ones such as cancer research to something as rare as Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease. Truth be told, my understanding of PMD was minimal prior to this article since this disease affects one in almost 200,000 males in the United States. (PMD is an X-linked recessive trait that is only present in males; females are only possible carriers of PMD)

In our current culture, people have the ability to go from unknown to super stardom literally over night! As exciting and awesome as that is, I also think it is quite scary because sometimes people go viral for being terrible or super awkward. The reason I brought this subject up is because of the Super Bowl.

I have always had high hopes of becoming a mother someday, and I still cling on to that desire. However, I do not believe women should be married or bear children at an early age. Mothers need to be both emotionally and physically ready for those experiences. The issue of child brides and mothers is damaging to not only women themselves but also to poverty on a national scale. There are many severe cases of young mothers around the globe, but one of them specifically is in Guatemala, a developing nation in Latin America.

Last week, I may have mentioned that this time of year is where TV goes to die. however, what I dod not take into account is that it’s trailer season! Not one but two super-amazing, awesome trailers debuted over the past week: one for season five of “Game of Thrones” and the other for “Wet Hot American Summer.” We knew that a “Game of Thrones” trailer would be forthcoming, and rather than shoot my “GOT” wad this early in the semester, I’ll just say that it was awesome. Like, really awesome. But the real exciting (and kind of unexpected) news of the day belongs to the “Wet Hot American Summer” teaser.
