Rebels have always been a favorite of mine. They cannot be
ignored, whether it's the teenager deliberately staying out past
curfew or the revolutionary hero. We've got Martin Luther King Jr.,
Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, James Dean, Gandhi, Emiliano Zapata,
oldies like George Washington and Lewis and Clark, and
contemporaries like Lady Gaga. The rebel mindset incorporates
defiance, stubbornness and a dose of crazy, but most importantly, a
vision. And to reference the popular Apple ad that raises a glass
to the ""round pegs in square holes,"" the rebels are the ones who
push the envelope and end up changing the world, just because they
think they can.

The official website of Beach House, the four-year-old,
two-person ""dream-pop"" duo, brings you to a single image of the
two acting like a pair of misfit, ironically swanky teens. You
can't see their faces. There is a sculpture of a head with multiple
faces in between them, and Victoria Legrand's hand is tucked into
her pants next to her belt buckle, where ""GIT SUM!"" has been
MSPainted in. To boot, the three links on the page—aside from those
accessing a new Teen Dream single—are miniscule and
hidden. As a whole, this is uncannily indicative of the unabashed
timidity and awkward social remoteness Beach House purvey through
their music.

It would sound absurd to call platinum-selling, arena-filling,
most-critically-beloved-band-in-the-world Radiohead an underground
act. But on the other hand, they don't operate or sound anything
like a mainstream, best-selling rock band (even the ones that have
gotten popular aping mid-90s Radiohead): You'll hardly ever hear
them on the radio or see them on TV; their idea of promoting an
album is mentioning it on a blog ten days before it comes out; and
they've built their reputation on some of the strangest, most
original music of the past two decades.

Recently, Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Walker has
expressed an interest in having former vice presidential candidate
Sarah Palin endorse him. As a viable candidate with a record of
solid results in fiscal policy (the area Wisconsin needs the most
help with by far) in particular, this is a major step in the wrong
direction for him.

1st Lt. Dan Choi was notified in April of this year that the
Army would begin discharge proceedings against him. Choi, an
Arabic-speaking linguist, Iraq war veteran, West Point graduate and
infantry officer, served in the nation's armed forces for 10 years.
Now he faces an other than honorable discharge from the military
because he is gay and doesn't want to lie about it.

Amelia Earhart was a risk taker. She flew solo over both the
Atlantic and Pacific oceans and died trying to fly around the
world. Regrettably, ""Amelia,"" the new film about Earhart's life,
is not able to take off beyond the basic biopic structure.

Players on the Madison Ice Muskies might not be a step away from
the NHL, but the team hopes that won't stop local hockey fans from
coming out to support them.

Multi-sport athletes at the collegiate and professional levels
have always been rare when each game requires so much devotion of
time and effort in order to become the best. The critics reason
that individuals can't possibly reach maximum potential in a
particular sport if they're trying to juggle two games at a
time.

It's not often David Robinson and John Stockton will be referred
to as ""those other guys"" in basketball circles. On Friday,
however, that's what they'll be.

Art Brut seemed destined to be a one-album wonder. 2005's Bang
Bang Rock & Roll synthesized caffeinated guitar hooks with
concise sentiments, but the delicate balance between their forceful
sound and their comprehensive tongue-in-cheekness was surely too
tenuous to hold. Four years after their debut, though, Art Brut
continue to defy the odds with their third LP. Art Brut vs. Satan
picks up right where the others left off, adding yet another
success to an already overachieving catalog.

Without question, serving as District 8 alder in the large and
impressive shadow of outgoing Ald. Eli Judge is not the most
enviable position. Both Bryon Eagon and Mark Woulf, the two
candidates for Judge's position, have made no secret about their
respect for Judge and commitment to continuing his impressive work
in students' issues such as downtown lighting and tenant rights.
Although both candidates bring an impressive slate of ideas related
to student and city concerns, only Bryon Eagon has the pragmatic
and realistic approach to accomplish the focal points of his
campaign. After meeting with both candidates, The Daily Cardinal
Editorial Board reaffirms its earlier endorsement for Bryon Eagon
in District 8.

A few months ago, after a particularly lengthy phone
conversation with a sexually frustrated friend, I decided her
exploits would be the perfect ice breaker while driving with my
brother on the way to lunch. I knew he'd listen because, well, I
was driving, and everyone realizes my driving is a delicate state
deserving of the utmost respect and fear.

It is time to start thinking about how to treat your sweetie
this Saturday. Flowers are lovely, candles are fine, but there is
nothing like the classic box of chocolates. Luckily for Madison
residents, local chocolatiers Markus Candinas, Gail Ambrosius and
David Bacco have turned the tried and true classic into an even
more extraordinary indulgence. While each offers a different (and
divine) delicacy, all are sure to please.

Over the past few weeks, I have been listening, in small doses,
to the Christmas radio station, 94.9 FM. I'm curious as to how this
awful phenomenon not only survives, but begins at an earlier date
each November. While I don't have a definitive answer to that
question, I have noticed that there are really only five types of
songs played on the holiday station.

The hype surrounding college football is always at an all-time
high at the beginning of the season. Preseason rankings come in and
experts are quick to pick their favorites for BCS Bowls and the
National Championship. In the end, it all is meaningless until the
season is actually played. After all, that's what the excitement is
really all about.

Rise up, discouraged youth! Today is our day! Seize the moment!
With one stroke of the pen, our generation can make our voices
heard and ensure a better future. One penstroke has the power to
oil the long-frozen gears of progress and accelerate the evolution
of civilization.

Losing the top two scorers from the record-setting 2007 squad,
last year's Wisconsin men's basketball team was not projected to
achieve much in the way of national recognition and conference
supremacy. But a dedicated batch of talent led by then-seniors
Brian Butch, Greg Stiemsma, Tanner Bronson and Michael Flowers
defied expectations and led the Badgers to a 2008 Big Ten title and
a trip to the Sweet 16 in March.
