Cover art is probably one of the least essential ingredients in
the making of a successful album. And yet, it's always strangely
satisfying to buy a record and find that the artist has managed to
capture the essence of their record via a simple insert. Salient
examples include the chaos of Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted or
the ethereal nature of Sigur Rós' Agætis Byrjun.

In recent years there has been an exaggerated assault on the
word liberal,"" aimed at linking the word to connotations of wimpy
foreign policy, high taxes, reckless spending and crackpot ideas,
to name a few.

Mother Teresa, the tiny Albanian woman who spent her life
working with the poorest of the poor,"" is in the news again (and
no, she isn't in a custody battle or in trouble for stealing OJ's
memorabilia). In 1998, Pope John Paul II raised a few eyebrows when
he put her on the fast track to sainthood just one year after her
death, but it is the most recent revelation about her that is
causing a torrent of controversy in the theological world.

It's rare when an album legitimately stuns you with something so
good that years from now, people will look back and say, God, they
just don't make music like that anymore.""

Last Wednesday, the United States Supreme Court issued a
landmark 5-4 ruling that upheld the federal government's ban on
partial birth abortions. In a stinging dissent, Justice Ruth
Bader-Ginsburg called the decision ""alarming.""

There is an obvious reason why, even in a season as hyped as
this one, no one was calling for Bo Ryan's head when the
seventh-ranked Badgers lost to Missouri State early this season.

Some movies are simply made to be enjoyed at the theater. They
are not films—they will not woo critics with their nuanced
storytelling, nor garner attention with controversial subject
matter. They are indeed movies, not films, and they exist solely to
entertain, nothing more. Zack Snyder's movie adaptation of Frank
Miller's ""300"" is a fine example of an excellent movie when taken
for what it is.

The sky screamed blue on an unseasonably warm January day as
thousands upon thousands gathered within blocks of our nation's
capital were just moments away from screaming for immediate peace
in Iraq.

From Asia to Temple of the Dog, the output of rock supergroups
tends to bow to the hubris that the designation implies. The world
of indie rock, on the other hand, seems to have had much better
luck, with the success stories (the New Pornographers, Broken
Social Scene, the Raconteurs, the Postal Service) outweighing the
also-rans (Electronic).

If there was an award for having the most slogans, Lagunitas
Brewing Co.'s Brown Shugga' would be the clear winner. Sporting
such subtle mantras as ""Beer Speaks. People Mumble."" and
""Cultured Brewery Yeast is a'kin to feeding Raw Shark to your
Gerbil. It is unlikely to ever occur in nature."" Brown Shugga'
brings the average public rest room to shame in terms of pure,
irreverent witticisms.

A downtrodden goat gracing its label, Big Sky Brewery's Scape
Goat Pale Ale is a lesson in a 12 oz. bottle. Like some sort of
liquid allegory for scapegoating, this beer may not seem like the
right idea at first, but after a few sips, you'll feel like you're
getting away with murder.

The usual suspects litter the top of the BCS standings. Ohio
State, Michigan, Texas, USC, a dash of one-loss SEC teams and two
Big East teams (although probably not the two you're used to) sit
in the Top 10, seemingly setting the nation up for another BCS
brawl among the big dogs.

Owning books is not, in most cases, like owning CDs or movies,
which you will often enjoy multiple times in your lifetime/the past
month. If you are as musically inclined as I am, it is much to the
annoyance of those around you. And if you liked [Will Ferrell movie
here] as much as every other college kid did, it is much to my
annoyance.

Let me begin this column by saying that on Saturday I watched
""American Psycho,"" and I am now legitimately freaked out by a)
Christian Bale, 2) people who decorate their homes with a lot of
white, and d) chainsaws. This brings up an excellent point. What if
Tobey Maguire had been cast as Patrick Bateman, prince of delusion?
Or what about everybody's favorite actor ever (!!!), Paul Walker?
Would it have worked? All the sweating and the tanning and the
handling of nail guns, knives, axes, etc.? Would you really get it
if Peter Parker pointed a handgun at a kitten?
