In 1980 at the Louisiana Super Dome, Roberto Duran had enough.
With 17 seconds remaining in the eighth round of his bout with
Sugar Ray Leonard—their second of three memorable fights—Duran put
up his glove in a sign of admitting defeat. ""A¡No MA¡s! A¡No
MA¡s!"" he screamed.

The boys from Oakland are on the brink of history. One more win
over Dallas for the bearded wonder Baron Davis and his crew and
they become only the third eight-seed in NBA history to upset a
one-seed in the playoffs.

It's funny how fast things go from questionable to inevitable.
Before the 2007 baseball season, whether Barry Bonds could reach
755 was like the question of whether Phil Mickelson would win a
major before his Masters victory in '04. Sports fans knew he was
certainly capable, but getting over the hump could prove to be
difficult.

In the 1992 classic ""Glengarry Glen Ross,"" Alec Baldwin's
character informed three beleaguered real estate salesmen that
first place in the company's sales competition received a Cadillac.
""You want to know what second place is?"" Baldwin asked. ""Second
place is a set of steak knives. Third place is you're
fired.""

On a sunny Sunday afternoon in front of a record crowd of 1,097
at the Goodman Diamond, the Badgers split a double-header with
Purdue. Wisconsin (3-5 Big Ten, 21-13 overall) fell to the
Boilermakers (4-5, 24-26-1) 4-3 in the first half and edged out a
6-5 win in the second game. Both teams rallied in the final innings
of each game, but both came up just short.

Holy smokes, have you heard the news?! The Atlanta Braves are
playing .800 baseball! Trot Nixon is batting .556! Solomon Torres
leads the majors with four saves! Arizona rookie Chris B. Young has
more RBIs (9) than Former NL MVPs Barry Bonds (3), Albert Pujols
(2), Sammy Sosa (3) and Chipper Jones (0) have combined! And don't
forget that six starters are tied for the lead in ERA with 0.00!
WOW!

Situation A: The Huskies were seconds away from wrapping up a
victory against Duke in a 2004 Final Four match-up. The score was
79-75 as the Blue Devils inbounded the ball to then-senior Chris
Duhon. Duhon streaked across the court, untouched, and nailed a
38-foot 3-point heave at the buzzer. The shot was absolutely
meaningless. The scoreboard read 79-78 and Connecticut was still
going on to the national title game.

Seasons end. That's what they do. And sometimes they end
prematurely.
(03/18/07 6:00am)
CHICAGO—After a record-breaking regular season, the Wisconsin
Badgers' postseason ended prematurely.

In the 67-year history of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament,
a 15 seed has upset a 2 seed four times. Friday, the Wisconsin
Badgers hope to avoid being the fifth.

Ask the average Badger fan about Texas A & M-Corpus Christi
and without a couple of days to do research, they might not have
even known the school exists. Heck, if you asked the Badgers
themselves on Selection Sunday, you would have gotten the same
answer. Answers might range from confusion over which team Acie Law
IV plays for (the Texas A&M Aggies), mispronunciation of the
school name (Corpus Crispy) or perplexity over why a team from
Texas is nicknamed the Islanders (CC is a tropical destination on
the Gulf of Mexico).

A glance up at the clock showed all twos, but it was No. 3 who
took over.

CHICAGO—After splitting the two games with Ohio State during the
regular season, the rubber match in the Big Ten Tournament
Championship did not go the UW men's basketball team's way. Ohio
State got out to an early lead and never looked back, steamrolling
UW en route to a 66-49 victory and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA
Tournament.

The most important game in the Big Ten Tournament's first round
as far as the Badgers are concerned is the No. 7 vs. No. 10 game,
which features Michigan State and Northwestern. The Badgers play
the winner Friday in Chicago at 1:30 p.m.
(03/07/07 6:00am)
The No. 6 vs. No. 11 team features another matchup of teams that
have faced each other just once this season. If Illinois (9-7 Big
Ten, 21-10) were to suffer a defeat at the hands of the Nittany
Lions (2-4, 11-18) in the first round of the tournament, they would
most likely miss the NCAA Tournament.

Wins were hard to come by for the Minnesota Gophers (3-13 Big
Ten, 9-21 overall) during the 2006-'07 season. When Michigan's
Jarret Smith's two free throws clinched a victory for the
Wolverines with 9.7 seconds left, it must have been difficult for
the Gophers to stomach. But when they had a chance to exact revenge
against the Wolverines two weeks later at home, they came up short,
losing by 11.
(03/05/07 6:00am)
As Drew Neitzel's last second 3-point attempt came up short,
Kammron Taylor and the rest of the Badgers could breathe a sigh of
relief.
(03/04/07 6:00am)
The week couldn't have started much worse for Kammron Taylor.
And, judging by his reaction as the buzzer sounded Saturday, it
could not have ended much better.

Whether they were tears of disappointment or tears of anguish,
there was certainly sadness in the Polar Bear's face Sunday
afternoon in Columbus.
(02/22/07 6:00am)
Jason Chappell's eyes get wide and a smile creeps across his
face when he talks about it. He remembers it well. Sophomore Devin
Harris drained the last of his two free throws with 0.4 seconds
left against Illinois, and the Kohl Center just erupted.
