For a year in which the Big Ten largely failed to meet
expectations, Wisconsin men's basketball (12-4 Big Ten, 25-7
overall) took care of business and crashed the cusp of the national
scene. The Badgers' school-record 25 wins, first Big Ten Tournament
title and No. 10 national ranking turned heads across America and
earned the team its crown as Men's Team of the Year.

As the regular season moves toward its most critical juncture,
No. 6 Wisconsin (14-6-6 Western Collegiate Hockey Association,
20-9-7 overall) earned a pair of victories over Alaska-Anchorage
(7-18-3, 10-19-3) this weekend. UW defeated the Seawolves 3-0 on
Friday and completed the sweep Saturday with a 3-1 victory.

In a gallant effort last week, No. 5 Wisconsin women's hockey
split two games with No. 1 Minnesota to remain tied with the
Gophers for the WCHA lead. In this weekend's matchup, the Badgers
(18-5-3) will host the unranked Niagara Purple Eagles (5-19-3) at
the Kohl Center. Despite the two teams' disparity in wins, Head
Coach Mark Johnson pledges no lack of motivation for his
team.

After climbing the rankings during a strong nonconference
season, the No. 13 Wisconsin wrestling team prepares for a
challenging weekend. The Badgers travel to face No. 12 Minnesota
Friday and host No. 6 Penn State Sunday.

Three short months ago, before the men's college basketball
season tipped off, great expectations flowed through the Big Ten.
After struggling in past seasons to find a place among America's
elite conferences, Big Ten coaches claimed to have the talent and
experience to earn nationwide respect for their league. Among
others, Minnesota Head Coach Dan Monson fueled the hype
machine.

It is late November again. A new chill has crept into the air,
trees have again completed their yearly purge and the Badger men's
cross-country team has secured yet another Big Ten title. This
pattern has held for years, and every fall, while most Badger fans
have typically concerned themselves with their football team's
mediocre bowl destination, the Wisconsin men's cross-country team
has been stealthily adorning its dynasty.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, and a similar fate
would likely befall exhausted men's track teams. Fortunately for
the Badgers, head coach Ed Nuttycombe has a masterful way with his
athletes, and his team's performance has proven his prowess. After
practice, athletes joke and laugh with coaches, visitors and each
other. After all, when a team has won three straight Big Ten
outdoor championships, they're entitled to a little fun.

With a 4-13 record and the modest position of 10th in the Big
Ten, it would seem that Wisconsin's men's tennis team has little
fuel for optimism. However, silver linings abound for the Badgers,
who charge down the stretch in the best shape of their conference
season. Before dropping a match to No. 12-ranked Minnesota last
weekend, the young team snapped a 10-game losing streak with a
convincing win over Iowa.

Very few UW students had as much at stake on Wednesday as
Wisconsin's senior football players. The athletes spent the
afternoon in the McClain Facility running, jumping and working to
convince scouts of their worthiness to compete in the National
Football League.

As a member of the Big Ten, Wisconsin's wrestling team has an
annual opportunity to measure itself against the strongest
wrestling teams in the country. Unfortunately, with nine teams in
the national rankings, there is seemingly no good time for a young
team to earn experience. After an undefeated non-conference season,
the UW wrestlers earned only one more win after conference play
began.

This year, the NBA trade deadline marked the end of an era for
both the Milwaukee Bucks and the Seattle Supersonics. The Bucks
slammed the door on the \Big Three"" years by trading shooting
guard Ray Allen to the Sonics along with guards Kevin Ollie and
Ronald Murray and a conditional first round draft choice. The
Sonics in return sent fan favorite Gary Payton and forward Desmond
Mason.

On Valentine's Day, many students have plans for romantic dates;
others have plans to bemoan the lack of one. In contrast, the UW
men's track team has plans to demonstrate their love for their
sport. This Friday, the team heads to the Iowa State Classic, where
they hope to put all the pieces in place for a successful run to
the top of the Big Ten.
