As many of you know, earlier this year Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a bill banning the “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” throughout Russia. These laws have made it illegal to hold gay pride parades and events, to defend gay rights through the media and to inform minors about the gay and lesbian community. Not only have these laws been imposed on citizens of Russia, but also on foreigners and the media, with fines of up to $31,000 being implemented. Due to the vagueness of this law, citizens and foreigners alike in Russia can be arrested simply for stating that they are gay.

For as long as I can remember, I have been a die-hard movie fan. From the theater, to an outdoor cinema in the park, to my couch at home, there has always been a level of excitement to watching movies that I can’t describe. Lately, however, getting lost inside the world of film has been hard for me due to our modern film industry’s obsession with portraying females as shallow, simple and man-obsessed people.

Around the world, quotas have been implemented into different countries’ government and parliament systems for the people in power to more accurately reflect the population of that country. Despite the quota’s ability to get women and minority groups more accurately represented, the United States continues to reject implementing quotas into its Congressional branch.

As a nerdy, opinionated middle-schooler who mostly surrounded myself with other nerds, I was surprisingly unaware of the biases that affected my teachers and classmates each day. I was well aware of the fact that women were discriminated against in the world, but I always thought of it as a far- off issue, something that didn’t affect me.

The song “Blurred Lines,” by Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell Williams, which has been at the top of the American charts for weeks, is a perfect example of how American popular culture promotes rape and sexual violence against women. The song has grown famous for its extremely offensive lyrics and a music video so sexually explicit YouTube has blocked it. Aside from this, the song features lines that objectify and degrade women, and suggest that women’s voices simply don’t matter.

This Friday I’ll be trading in the determinedly snowy streets of Madison for the sun-scorched roads of Austin, Texas to attend the 2012 South by Southwest festival with a few of my fellow Cardinal writers. Some call it the ultimate spring break for nerds, others a colossal celebration of all aspects of millennial culture. That includes music, technology and of course, where I will be most concerned, film. Considering that in 2007, SXSW served as the launching pad for the now ubiquitous social networking service Twitter, who knows what world-changing creative properties will debut this year, changing life, and our use of hash tags, as we know it forever.
