This week I come to you on behalf of the month of April, perhaps
the most underappreciated month of all-especially in the world of
sports. You see, April comes after the \almighty"" month of March,
home to March Madness-a plethora of conference basketball
tournaments and The Big Dance.

If you didn't see a Wisconsin men's hockey team in the last four
years, you really missed out on something special.

To start off, if you are reading my column today, thank you. But
if you are reading it in class, then I feel sorry for you. There
are obviously better things to be doing than sitting in class right
now, like watching the UW-Milwaukee Panthers try to upset Alabama
or seeing if Oakland can become the first No. 16 seed to beat a No.
1 seed, but then actually losing by 40 to the Tarheels. Or you
could ditch class to check out just another chapter in the dismay
of America's pastime.

While the No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers try to avenge last year's
first-round loss to Alaska-Anchorage this weekend, the other eight
teams in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association will be squaring
off in their own best-of-three first-round matchups in hopes to
advance to next weekend's WCHA Final Five. For the Badgers to avoid
having to play in the Final Five play-in game Thursday, they are
going to need some help from of the road teams this weekend.

When the 2004-05 men's hockey schedule was announced, all eyes
shifted to one stretch on the schedule-the final five series.
Included in those five weeks were all of the teams expected to join
Wisconsin atop the standings come the end of the year. Sure enough,
when the home stretch came around, Denver, Colorado College,
Minnesota, North Dakota, Minnesota-Duluth and Wisconsin were all in
the top six in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

With the NHL taking the year off, it has become increasingly
hard for me to get my hockey fix week in and week out. With the
Badger men's and women's teams both out of town this past weekend
and this coming weekend, the chances of catching a game were bleak.
Luckily, my prayers were answered last weekend, and not only did I
get to see some hockey, but I was also reminded of the valuable
lesson of why high school sports are so great.

With its Western Collegiate Hockey Association championship
hopes riding on the line, the No. 6 Wisconsin men's hockey team
traveled to North Dakota for a series with the Sioux. Unfortunately
for the Badgers, (16-8-2 WCHA, 21-10-3 overall) they mustered just
one league point with a loss and a tie, meaning the best they can
do in the league is finish in a tie for second.

I come to bury Jason Giambi, not to praise him ... though I'm

It seems so simple. Shoot a basketball from a line 15 feet away
from a hoop suspended 10 feet above the floor. To make things
easier, nobody is guarding you.

For the No. 6 Wisconsin men's hockey team (15-6-1 Western
Collegiate Hockey Association, 20-8-2 overall), solid special teams
play has been the staple of its success. Such was the case this
past weekend as the Badgers struggled on the power play and the
penalty kill, resulting in a tie and loss at now-No. 1 Denver
(16-4-2, 21-6-2).

The list of items working against the Badgers in the second half
of Wednesday night's game with Iowa was long: They were without
important bench players senior forward Zach Morley and freshman
center Brian Butch, the Hawkeyes had emerged from the locker room
shooting lights out and the Badgers trailed by 13 with 12:44
remaining in the game. The Badgers were in danger of losing their
second straight contest... but they did not act like it.

With just about anything in life, there comes a point when you
have to draw a line. Perhaps it's capping the amount of beverages
you drink so that you won't fight a rival on the floor of a bar.
Maybe it's putting an end to a game of baseball when you can no
longer see the ball. And you definitely have to set a maximum pot
limit in a progressive-pot game of poker with friends.

To the average fan, a manager for the men's basketball team is
someone who takes orders from head coach Bo Ryan, someone who does
the team's laundry, someone who wipes up players' sweat. But to the
players, coaches-and even the managers themselves-they are just as
much a part of the successful Badger program as anyone else.

At the end of last semester, I warned all of you that I would be
taking a month off from \Schmoldt. 45"" to pursue my rap career.
Well, I can gladly say that, despite my album's success among other
distractions, I'll be right back here every Thursday to distract
you for an extra five minutes during lecture.

Winter break saw the end of non-conference play and the
beginning of the Big Ten season for the Wisconsin men's basketball
team (11-3 overall, 2-1 Big Ten). It also saw the Badgers remain
unbeaten in their last 37 home games, a school record and the
longest home winning streak in the country. While the Kohl Center
success continues for UW, the Badgers continue to struggle on the
road, losing twice in the past month.

TAMPA, Fla.-The new year did not start out the way the Wisconsin
Badgers had hoped. Its offense sputtered out of the gates and the
Badgers dug themselves a hole they could not recover from, falling
to the Georgia Bulldogs 24-21 at Raymond James Stadium in front of
62,414 attending the 2005 Outback Bowl.

At this point in last year's season, the Wisconsin men's hockey
team was hitting full stride and in the middle of what would turn
out to be a school-record, 15-game unbeaten streak. A year later,
the No. 2 Badgers (9-3-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association,
12-4-0 overall) have won three games in a row and seven of their
last eight. A rather forgiving schedule over the next month may
help the Badgers build up another long streak.
