With some calling to expand college football’s four-team playoff, I say why not go whole hog and play an exact replica of this year’s March Madness bracket on the gridiron. I’ll be deciding these games by examining the 2016 resumes of the teams in the tournament, and close calls are my personal opinion. With none of the four College Football Playoff teams in this tournament field, it’s wide open for the taking.

The Wisconsin football program announced the hiring of Bob Bostad as the inside linebacker coach Friday, a position opened when Justin Wilcox left to coach at California.

For the Wisconsin football team, the winter break was bittersweet. There was plenty of good to finish the season, but also several key departures, which could become issues in future years.

In Wisconsin’s first game of the season at Lambeau Field, Troy Fumagalli was the key offensive player, totaling 100 yards on seven catches. Throughout the rest of the regular season, only once did he have more than five catches or 55 yards. The tight end, that many predicted would be the team’s big playmaker after the explosion in Green Bay, had gone silent.

After Saturday’s loss in the Big Ten Championship, Wisconsin (7-2 Big Ten, 10-3 overall) still found itself in a New Year's Six bowl when the bids were announced Sunday. The Badgers’ opponent will be the undefeated No. 12 Western Michigan Broncos (8-0, 13-0) in the Cotton Bowl.

INDIANAPOLIS — Throughout the season, Wisconsin, which came into the season unranked, proved preseason doubters wrong en route to a surprising Big Ten West title. But, when push came to shove, the Badgers crumbled.

Before the season started, it seemed clear that Wisconsin’s linebacker corps would be the strength, not just of the defense, but of the entire team. While that has been true thus far, it hasn’t been because of the same high-profile players many expected.

This season, Wisconsin’s defense has been in a constant state of flux. With players getting injured and coming back from injury, and some going from hot to cold in a heartbeat, finding consistency has been difficult.

Last season, the Wisconsin offensive line struggled to perform at a high level, a departure from the Badgers’ usual dominance in the trenches. Comprised of mostly freshmen, the Badgers cycled through various combinations due to consistently poor play.

While not as highly anticipated as Wisconsin’s night game against Ohio State two weeks ago, and while the matchup Nebraska felt similar to that OSU game, this time Wisconsin held on to beat a Top 10 team, winning 23-17.

For many Badgers starters, the road from high school to being a Wisconsin football star was pretty linear: standout at an in-state high school, get heavily recruited, receive playing time as an underclassman and then start as a weathered veteran.

With ESPN’s College Gameday in town, everyone across the country knew this game had the potential to be a thriller. It did not disappoint as the two teams went back-and-forth throughout the second half, but No. 2 Ohio State outlasted the No. 8 Badgers 30-23 in overtime.
(09/30/16 5:30pm)
Despite being as different as possible, there are two players on Wisconsin’s defense that are as close as teammates could be.
(09/29/16 7:00pm)
Against Michigan State last week, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that Wisconsin’s defensive secondary dictated the game. Both starting corners had an interception, and senior safety Leo Musso had an incredible fumble recovery touchdown that was a microcosm of the game as a whole.

I’m just going to come out and say it: Football fans in Wisconsin have been spoiled by great quarterbacks. Going from arguably a top-five all-time QB, Brett Favre, to arguably a top-two in the game right now, Aaron Rodgers, is absurd, and many Packers fans seem to think that’s just the way football is.

Despite a tumultuous afternoon for the No. 9 Badgers (3-0), they snuck out of Camp Randall with a 23-17 win against the Georgia State Panthers (0-3) after falling behind by four points in the fourth.
(09/15/16 8:32pm)
Unless chaos abounds, the Badgers should handily defeat the Georgia State Panthers this Saturday. Just like in the game against Akron, UW will be ahead by a lot in the second half, and again they’ll give a number of second- and third-stringers some playing time.
(09/15/16 11:30pm)
To the casual Wisconsin fan, after losing Alex Erickson to the NFL, there really wasn’t any receiving threat left on the Badgers. Against LSU, however, Troy Fumagalli showed them that they were dead wrong.
