Ellipse Coffee & Crepes is State Street’s newest sweet treat destination. After opening in August 2025, this Middle Eastern-owned bakery has been a hot spot for students and Madison residents alike to try fun flavor combinations of crepes, waffles, shakes and more.
As soon as you walk in, you are greeted with a wonderful atmosphere of soft lighting and delicious smells. The restaurant is pretty small, so there is limited seating available.
There are crepes and waffles in 16 flavors, eight savory crepes, eight shakes, ice cream, baked goods and almost 50 drink options. Food prices range from $12 to $15 and drinks from $3 to $8.
With this many options, item descriptions are impossible to fit on the menu, and people may not know exactly what they are ordering. I ordered an Oreo crepe. My friends, Helen Pygon and Micah Gilpin, got a Strawberry Cheesecake waffle and a Kinder Bueno shake with a cookie to-go.
After waiting for about 10 minutes, we were served our beautifully-decorated sweets. The Strawberry Cheesecake waffle came with an extra scoop of ice cream to complete it, and the Oreo crepe was decked out in chocolate sauce and Oreo dust. The amazing smells that enveloped the restaurant were enhanced when we received our items, the scent still lingering for the entire walk home.
For the Oreo crepe, the dough was incredibly tough, which might have to do with Ellipse going for a “stuffed” crepe rather than a traditional fold. I had a hard time cutting into it. Despite this, it tasted pretty good. There was lots of white and milk chocolate sauce and Oreo pieces all over the top, but the “stuffed” aspect was a little lackluster.

Pygon got the Strawberry Cheesecake waffle, and she expressed a similar opinion about her dessert.
“I feel like it's not super cheesecake-y. It really just tastes like strawberry and white chocolate, but besides that, there isn’t much to complain about,” Pygon said.

The Kinder Bueno shake was delicious too, but also not what we were expecting.
“I liked the Nutella in it, but the milkshake itself is kind of ‘milky’. You don’t get the flavor as much as I thought you would, but I enjoyed the little Kinder on top,” Gilpin said.
Overall, Ellipse Coffee & Crepes provides a fun experience with lots of options, but might not be a must-do spot. They could likely benefit from limiting their menu, giving item descriptions and honing more flavor to make sure each dish’s taste lives up to its presentation.
If you get the chance to try it, go for it — just keep your expectations in check.
