The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigations is investigating the fatal shooting of a suspect during a search involving a weapons violation in Dane County.
On Sunday afternoon, the Dane County Sheriff's Office searched the Jefferson Street area for the reported suspect.
“[The Sheriff’s Office] was searching in the Oregon area for an individual who was alleged to have committed several weapons violations in recent days,” the Wisconsin DOJ said in a statement.
After officials set up a perimeter around the area, the 5200 block of County Road CC, the suspect fled on foot.
At approximately 3:15 p.m., a deputy with the Sheriff’s Office fatally shot the suspect. Lifesaving measures were unsuccessfully performed at the scene, according to the statement.
The DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken over the investigation into the incident.
“[The DCI] is leading this investigation,” the DOJ explained. “All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.”
According to the statement, the deputy who killed the suspect was placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
This incident came on the heels of the fatal shooting of 46-year-old Quantaze D. Campbell by a Dane County Sheriff’s Office deputy on Oct. 13.
The shooting of Campbell triggered a vigil by local organization Freedom, Inc. The DCI is also investigating this incident, with the officer involved being placed on administrative leave.
Once the review of this case concludes, the DCI will turn over investigative reports to the Dane County District Attorney.
During a short briefing on the weapons violation shooting, Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett took no questions. Per Barrett, the name of the suspect will be released when the family is notified.
