Golden Oscar awards sit waiting to be handed out to Hollywood's finest performers and creators.

And the Oscar goes to: A full list of this year's Academy Award nominees

The 2019 Academy Award nominations were announced yesterday morning in Los Angeles. A wider range of selections in genres highlights the list of nominees.

“Black Panther” is now the first superhero film ever to be nominated in the best picture category. “Roma” – a black-and-white Spanish-language period drama – will be the first movie released by Netflix to be in the running for film of the year as well. Both signal a shift in how critics perceive certain genres and how audiences are watching movies.

Smash hits “A Star is Born” and “Vice” also earned best picture nominations in unsurprising fashion.

The Academy decided to go back in time to decades and centuries ago in choosing the Freddy Mercury-centric biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody," 18th century drama/dark comedy “The Favourite,"  the 1960s-set “Green Book” and “BlacKkKlansman," which takes place in the 1970s, for a total of eight best picture nominations.

The award for actress in a leading role looks to be a tight competition between singer-turned-actress Lady Gaga for her role in “A Star is Born” and the now seven-time nominated legend Glenn Close for her work in “The Wife." But the brilliant acting of Yalitza Aparicio in “Roma” may lead to an upset.

Olivia Colman as the queen in “The Favourite” and Melissa McCarthy from “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” round out this category.

Another intriguing race has been set up in the best actor category. Breathtaking transformations by Christian Bale as former Vice President Dick Cheney in “Vice” and Rami Malek as Freddy Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody” highlight the group.

Accompanying them are veteran actors Viggo Mortenson for his role in “Green Book," Bradley Cooper in “A Star is Born” and Willem Dafoe as painter Vincent van Gogh in “At Eternity’s Gate."

Marvel Comics superheroes are well represented in several categories. Aside from the “Black Panther” best picture nod, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” garnered a best animated feature film nomination and “Avengers: Infinity War” is up for best visual effects. “Black Panther” is also in consideration for several other awards, including costume design and sound mixing.

The 91st Academy Awards will be handed out during the televised live ceremony which will air Feb. 24, 2019, on ABC at 7 p.m. CDT.
