A burglary reportedly occurred on the 100 block of Broom Street Sunday afternoon.

Burglary on South Broom Street

A 21-year-old man was forced to flee his house on South Broom Street around 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon after he saw a man trying to break into his back door, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.

“The victim said prior loud bangs; a person was ringing his doorbell. He did not respond, and a couple of minutes later a stranger was trying to force the back door open,” MPD Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain said in the report. “He could hear a male voice making a grunting sound. He got out the front door and called 911.”

DeSpain wrote that a responding officer did find evidence of damage to the back door, but that there was no suspect when they arrived. He said the would-be burglar was likely scared away.

“The MPD was called to a similar crime last Tuesday afternoon,” DeSpain said. “The backdoor to a home in the 300 block of W. Doty St. was kicked in. Electronics and money had been stolen while residents were away.”

MPD officers do not know if the incidents are related, but said both have been referred to the Burglary Crimes Unit.
