UPDATE: Leibham vacates Senate seat

12-3-14 UPDATE: Sen. Joe Leibham is scheduled to become a public affairs director for Foley & Lardner LLP in Madison Dec. 8 and assume management of the firm’s Wisconsin government relations practice Jan. 1, according to a firm press release.

“Sen. Leibham brings deep legislative experience and intimate knowledge of how public policy is developed,” Foley Chair and CEO Jay Rothman said in the release. “He will help our clients effectively navigate the legislative, regulatory and political landscapes in Wisconsin state government.”

12-1-14 ORIGINAL: State Sen. Joe Leibham, R-Sheboygan, announced his retirement Monday after 12 years of service in the state Senate, vacating his position a month early in order to pursue an undisclosed job opportunity.

“In the interest of considering future employment opportunities while being compliant with state law, I must resign my position as State Senator for Wisconsin's 9th Senate District,” Leibham said in a statement, adding that he is working with replacement state Sen. elect Devin LeMahieu to ensure a smooth transition.

Leibham launched a campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives instead of seeking re-election in the state Senate but lost in the Republican primary to eventual winner Glenn Grothman.

“I have sought to always represent my constituents in a professional and dignified manner, striving to be respectful of the constituents I was elected to represent,” Leibham said in the statement. “It has been a true honor to work for and represent the residents of the 9th Senate District.”
