Woman shot in suicide prevention attempt

A 20-year-old female Madison resident was shot when trying to prevent a suicide early Saturday morning at a residence on University Avenue, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.

A caller reported hearing a female crying, followed by a gunshot as well as arguing and screaming, according to the report.

Madison resident Jeffrey C. Zhou, 20, was intoxicated in Allen House Apartments when he armed himself with a rifle and sat down on the floor, threatening to kill himself, according to the report.

The victim and Zhou then struggled over the gun. She placed her right hand over the muzzle during the struggle, MPD Lt. Eric Tripke wrote in the report. Zhou then shot the weapon into her hand.

The victim’s wound is not life threatening, and she is being treated at a local hospital.

Police charged Zhou with second degree recklessly endangering safety and placed him in the Dane County Jail, according to the report.
