Woman loses laptop to counterfeit money exchange

A 19-year-old downtown Madison woman using Craigslist to sell her 13-inch MacBook Pro laptop computer was the victim of fraud late Tuesday, according to Madison Police Department spokesperson Joel DeSpain.

The victim found a buyer who offered $700 for the transaction. The exchange occurred in the parking lot of a North Broom Street grocery store, according to DeSpain.

When the victim went to the parking lot, the buyer was accompanied by a man who stayed back while the Madison woman spoke to the buyer about the laptop, according to DeSpain. Both the buyer and the man are described as being Hispanic and in their mid-20s.

The buyer used a stack of $20 bills to pay for the laptop, which the victim realized were counterfeit when she returned home, noticing smeared ink and crooked print, at which point she notified the police, according to DeSpain.
