Landmarks Commission will meet Monday evening to discuss Mansion Hill construction

The city of Madison’s Landmarks Commissions will meet Monday evening at 4:45 p.m. in the Madison Municipal Building to discuss the ongoing issue of construction on the Mansion Hill Historic District on West Gilman Street.

The last meeting ended without a decision made on the fate of the buildings located at 121, 123 and 127 W. Gilman St.

Commission members believed the owner of the three locations, Steve Brown Apartments, intentionally allowed 127 W. Gilman St. to erode ensuring its demolition. Demolishing 127 and 121 W. Gilman would allow Steve Brown Apartments to construct two new luxury apartment complexes. Other plans included relocating 123 W. Gilman St.

Commission members were not satisfied with Steve Brown Apartments’ proposals and suggested different building designs. The company representatives will return with revised plans to construct new apartments no taller than four stories high and smaller square-footage.

The meeting will be held in room LL-110 at the municipal building located at 215 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.
