Madison Marathon to shut down local traffic access Sunday

The 18th running of the Madison Marathon is set to take place Sunday.

The race, which is scheduled to kick off at 8 a.m. from Capitol Square, will commence southbound toward Olin Park, at which point runners will turn around and race north along John Nolan Drive.

From there, runners will head southwest along West Washington Avenue to circle around Lake Wingra before returning to the campus area along Monroe Street.

Marathon runners will enter campus at Breese Terrace, turn west onto University Avenue, up Walnut Street, turn south along Observatory Drive and re-enter University Avenue by way of Charter Street.

All campus streets scheduled to host the race will have lanes closed throughout the course of the marathon and motorists and bicyclists should seek alternative travel routes Sunday. However, students who reside along these streets will still be allowed access to their homes.

The Madison Marathon raises funds for a number of local charity groups including The YMCA of Dane County, Badger Honor Flight and myTEAM TRIUMPH of Wisconsin.

Marathon organizers announced Thursday that the full marathon is sold out. The half marathon still has a few remaining slots for runner’s to sign up.
