Madison man successfully defends himself in attempted robbery

A 27-year-old Madison man was successful in fending off two attackers to maintain possession of his cell phone during an aggressive robbery Sunday night, according to a police report.

The suspects knocked the victim to the ground as he was walking near the intersection of North Blount Street and East Dayton Street, on the east side of Capitol Square, at approximately 10 p.m., according to the report.

“He immediately sprang to his feet, and started swinging at his assailants,” Madison Police Department Joel DeSpain said in the report.

The suspects fled with the victim’s headphones a few seconds after the robbery turned physical, however, the victim was able to hold onto his phone, according to the report.

DeSpain said in the report the victim told police he felt this incident was “not the first time [the robbers] had done this.”

DeSpain describes the suspects as two black males in their twenties, both about five feet 10 inches tall and wearing dark clothing.
