UW-Madison student dies in Waushara County drowning

A University of Wisconsin-Madison student drowned in a Waushara County lake early Friday morning and officials say alcohol was involved, according to Sheriff David Peterson in a news release.

The Waushara County Sheriff’s Office received a call for a missing swimmer, Bruce Beckley, at 12:49 a.m. Friends of Beckley said they had been swimming and could not find him.

County deputies and area fire department members searched the lake and located Beckley’s body at 2:07 a.m. He was unable to be revived, according to the news release.

Beckley, a UW-Madison junior from Milwaukee, was staying with friends in the area for the weekend, according to Peterson. They were swimming at Mount Morris Lake after posted hours.

Peterson said in the release that “alcohol consumption was a contributing factor in the incident.”
