Men's Soccer: Wisconsin comes up short at Michigan State

The Wisconsin men's soccer team (1-2-0 Big Ten, 5-7-3 overall) was unable to extend their winning streak to three games Sunday. The Badgers fell short on the road at Michigan State (2-2-0, 7-7-1), losing 2-0 in front of over 800 fans in East Lansing, Mich. Goals from the Spartans came in the 26 minute from redshirt senior forward Domenic Barone and in the 59 minute from sophomore forward Adam Montague.

The first Michigan State goal came from the penalty spot after freshman Andrew Lauko fouled the Spartan's redshirt junior midfielder Cody Henderson. Barone placed the penalty kick smoothly into the lower left corner.

The second goal came off a rebound when a powerful diagonal shot by Michigan State's Nick Wilson was turned away by freshman goalie Chase Rau and bounced right to the middle of the Badger's box. Wisconsin's offense only created nine shots, putting four on target. The Spartan's offense had 13 shots total.

Wisconsin outnumbered Michigan State in corner kicks 3-1. The Badgers also had the game's only two yellow cards.

The Badger's have now lost five consecutive matches in East Lansing without scoring a goal. The last Wisconsin goal at Michigan State came on Oct. 31, 2004, when the Badgers won 2-1.

Head coach John Trask has been rotating goalkeepers for the past four games. Rau got the start Sunday and matched his season high with six saves. It is not yet decided whether Rau or junior Max Jentsh will start in Wisconsin's next game.

The Badgers will next play two home games before ending the season on the road against Ohio State. Wisconsin will play Missouri- Kansas City on Wednesday and Northwestern next Sunday.
