UW-Madison junior Jacob Schmidt announced Tuesday his candidacy to represent the student-dominated District 8 area on the city's Common Council.
Schmidt said his campaign will focus on tenant rights, social justice, economic growth and improving city procedures such as snow removal.
He also identified campus safety as another important platform of his campaign, seeking to first expand the recently approved downtown lighting initiative introduced by current District 8 alder Eli Judge.
Early last week, Judge said he would not seek re-election in order to focus of law school after graduating in the spring. Judge's term expires in April 2009.
