As the first major winter storm of the season hit Madison Monday evening, the university declared Tuesday an advisory Snow Action Day.
Classes are not canceled, but any updates will be posted on the university's home page.
Forecasters are predicting accumulation of six to 10 inches before Tuesday night, and the university is asking students and faculty to use caution when traveling.
On Snow Action Days, drivers are encouraged to park in clear areas. The newly implemented action days aim to prioritize the areas that university crews clear, including streets, parking areas and sidewalks.
Any students who think it is too dangerous to travel to campus should contact their professors or teaching assistants about making up missed classes. Professors are asked to be flexible. University employee supervisors are asked to be flexible in approving employees' requests in missing work.
University employees are told to use their own judgment regarding their safety in winter weather travel, but must use accrued holiday, vacation or compensation time to cover absences.
