Letter to the Editor: Article brings necessary attention to recycling

Thank you for publishing the Oct. 24 article WISPIRG to broaden recycling campaign with annual Trash Sort"" by Grace Kim. As a member of Collegians For A Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT), it is encouraging to see people taking the initiative to clean up our campus. CFACT values a society of self-motivated environmental stewards, and this trash sort can truly make a difference. Voluntary recycling and source reduction, along with waste-to-energy technologies, can easily solve our garbage waste issues.

By encouraging members of our campus to get involved, everyone can do his or her part to successfully start an effective recycling program. The article stated that ""only 23 percent of water bottles are getting recycled out of all the billions of water bottles out there."" This statistic is surprising and should really motivate people to stop and think the next time they go to throw a recyclable item in the garbage. The visual of this group's members digging through trash and taking out recyclables does in fact give an excellent image of how much goes to waste. Together we can work toward a sustainable environment by monitoring our personal consumption and taking simple, active steps to make a big difference.

- Sincerely,
