2008-2009 Women's Golf Preview:

Fall is officially upon us. The weather has cooled off, students all over are dragging their books to class, and UW athletics are up and running. This Sunday, the ladies of the Badgers women's golf team are looking to get back into the swing"" of things on the East Coast.

Led by coach Todd Oehrlein, who will be coming into his fourth year as head coach of the Wisconsin women's golf team. He will be assisted by Lori Murphy, who will be coming into her fifth year as the exclusive woman's golf assistant coach after being an assistant coach for both men's and women's golf for 10 years. Now, with a few years of experience coaching, they are hoping to put together a successful season with the girls who have been around since they started, as well as some fresh new faces.

After losing only one senior this year, 2007 second-team All Big-Ten selection Katie Elliott, who led the team in scoring average the past three years, the Badgers are looking to fill the void by adding freshmen Jessica Gerry and Ellen Arkin to their roster.

Six seniors bring with them lots of experience to lead the roster of 13, which includes three juniors, two sophomores and the two new freshmen. The Badgers will look high and low for help, including sophomore Carly Werwie, who had a breakout season as a true freshman last year finishing with the

second-highest score for the Badgers with an average of 77.5, behind only Katie Elliott.

Surely the spotlight will be on many girls, but expect Werwie and others to improve upon last season. The summer training and practice is quickly coming to an end, leaving the girls only with enough time to sharpen their games as they get ready to head to their first tournament of the season at Yeaman's Hall Club in Charleston, S.C.

At the Cougar Classic, which is hosted by the College of Charleston, the girls of Wisconsin's women's golf team could show off their improved skills from their training over the summer. The tournament begins at 7 a.m. on Sunday Sept. 14 and goes all day. The team will then come back for the Badger Invitational on the 27th of this month, which will also include the College of Charleston.

The Badgers did not participate in the tournament last season, but are looking to make some noise there this season.
