Track teams pull together solid performances on road

The Wisconsin track sprinters and field-event athletes competed at the Iowa Musco Twilight Saturday, and both the men's and women's teams won two events. 

 

Sophomore Rayme Mackinson took first in the long jump after jumping 23 feet, 5.5 inches, putting him six inches ahead of Northern Iowa's Rozle Bucalo. 

 

Freshman Robert Dehn won the javelin by 12 feet at 187-2, although he was 15 feet short of his personal best from a week ago. 

 

In the high jump, sophomore Pat Nichols cleared 6-8.75 for a runner-up finish, tying his personal best and regional qualifying mark. 

 

Freshman David Pede took second place in the 5,000 meters in 14 minutes, 42.44 seconds, less than one second behind Minnesota's Sean Olson. 

 

UW's final runner-up performance came from senior hurdler Adam Pischke, who finished the 110-meter hurdles in 14.75 seconds. Decathlete David Grzesiak completed the event in 15.69 for sixth place.

Grzesiak also finished sixth in the high jump, clearing 6-6.75. 

 

Sophomore Billy Lease took third in the 400-meter hurdles in 55.48, while freshman Jim Lierman jumped 47-10.5 in the triple jump to also finish third. 

 

In the throws, sophomore Jake Fritz finished fourth in the shot put at 55-11 for fourth, while fellow sophomore Rory Linder took fifth and sixth in the hammer throw and discus, throwing 162-1 and 168-0, respectively. 

 

Sophomore Victor Dupuy also cracked the top six in the long jump in 22-7.25. 

 

Women's recap 

 

The UW women's track team placed 16 in the top five, with two wins at Iowa. 

 

Four inches off her personal best, sophomore LaQuita Brazil won the triple jump at 38-6.75, one half inch ahead of senior teammate Michelle Bellford, who jumped 38-6 for second. 

 

Bellford also took fifth in the long jump at 17-8. 

The 4x100-meter relay of Kayla McClendon, Caitlin Dodge, Akaila Cabell and Alexis Beecham ran a season best 47.20 seconds to win by one hundredth of a second over Northern Iowa. 

 

Cabell, a freshman, earned fifth individually in the 200 meters in 25.26. 

 

The throwing crew earned six top-five finishes. 

Junior Amanda Hoeppner placed second in the hammer throw at 179-6, second in the shot put at 46-5.5 and fourth in the discus at 148-6.  

 

Sophomore Samantha Dehn took second in the discus, throwing 150-6, and also earned fifth in the shot put at 40-9.75. 

 

Also placing in the top five were junior Amy Lewis, who threw 134-5 in the javelin for third, and junior Johanne Verpil, who threw 165-10 in the hammer throw for fifth.  

 

In the 3000-meter steeplechase, senior Kira Cerroni took second in 11:01 and sophomore Karen Greuel took fifth in 11:40. 

 

Freshman Leah Coyle earned third in the 5000 meters in 17:30, with teammate Kait Hurley close behind in 17:35 for fourth. 

 

UW's other top performances came from senior Alex McCannel, who finished third in the 100-meter dash in 12.73, and freshman Shannon Schlack, who earned fourth in the pole vault for clearing 11-1.75. 

 

The Badgers will compete at home May 10 in the Wisconsin Twilight, their final tune-up before the Big Ten Tournament.
