Gov. Jim Doyle and future Wisconsin governors no longer have the power to edit individual words of legislation on their own whims. It's about time.
This constistutional amendment has consistently been problematic and now the Frankenstein veto"" has finally been amended. It is a great relief to know that lawmakers' work will not become piecemeal in the hands of the governor.
This is an essential and long-awaited reform that sets a new precedent and standard of conduct for Wisconsin governors.
Manning victorious
Wyndham Manning's appointment to the District 5 seat on the Dane County Board of Supervisors is encouraging, but to be an effective supervisor he should follow in the footsteps of another student representative: District 8 Alder Eli Judge.
By increasing the visibility and awareness of his position, Judge has brought the student voice to the City Council. The Dane County Board certainly has different priorities, and Manning should capitalize on these differences to give student constituents a strong understanding of his role in the fifth district seat.
Manning has mentioned his intention to hold office hours, but to be a truly effective representative, he must consider reaching out to constituents both actively and personally. Manning has mentioned that he may start a blog or send an occasional e-mail to
constituents - these proposals are a great place to start.
Manning's predecessor, Ashok Kumar, failed on many occasions to be the voice of the student population on the Dane County Board. Manning's platforms are well-intentioned and reflect students' interests.
Manning must adhere to issues on the student agenda throughout the duration of his term. In emulating Judge and giving District 5 a truly representative voice, Manning will make an impact as the supervisor of District 5.
