Police arrest knife-wielding panhandler

The Madison Police Department arrested two transient men in separate incidents in downtown Madison Tuesday night.

The first incident occurred around 7:22 p.m. when police responded to a call about an aggressive panhandler in the 100 block of State Street, according to a police report. A business owner told police a man was getting in the faces"" of customers trying to enter his store.

When police arrived, the man, 53-year-old Eton Bentley, pulled out a switchblade knife, threw it on the ground and began screaming obscenities.

Bentley was arrested and tentatively charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a switchblade knife, menacing panhandling and a parole hold. MPD is requesting he be placed on the State Street ban list.

In a separate occurrence, police arrived at the Great Dane Brewery at 123 E. Doty St. at 11:37 p.m. after a man punched a window pane, breaking the glass of the establishment's door. MPD public information officer Joel DeSpain said employees escorted 51-year-old Ronald Duell out after a bartender refused service to him.

""They say he ordered a drink and the bartender told him she was not going to serve him and gave him a glass of water,"" DeSpain said.
