Madison Police are investigating the death of a UW-Madison female student on West Doty Street.

Police identified the victim as UW-Madison junior, Brittany Zimmermann, 21, of Marshfield, Wis. at a 5:30 p.m. news conference.

Madison Police Chief Noble Wray was joined by University of Wisconsin Police Department Police Susan Riseling, Dean of Students Lori Berquam, Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz, Dane County Coroner John Stanley to release all available details of the homicide.

Police blocked off the crime scene, an apartment at 517 W. Doty St. after receiving a call about a check on persons"" at a residence around 1:00 p.m.

""The nature of this investigation would make us think that we are perhaps dealing with something suspicious,"" Joel DeSpain, a Madison Police Department public information officer, said at the scene.

UW-Madison officials used its emergency communication system 'WiscAlerts' to notify students of the situation around 5:45 p.m. once it was announced the victim was a female student. This is the third time the system has been used.
