Saturday morning, Lovshack restaurant will open its doors and offer samples of a record-breaking calzone as a part of its grand opening celebration.
The Lovshack restaurant, located at 555 State Street, across from Urban Outfitters, announced its intention to break the Guinness World Record for baking the largest calzone. Upon completion, the cheese-filled pizza alternative will measure 10 feet long and twenty-two inches wide, more than a foot longer than the current record holder.
Mayor Dave Cieslewicz is scheduled to attend the grand opening and participate in the official measuring of the calzone. After the measurements are taken, the Lovshack will hand out samples, open its doors and continue the afternoon with a live band, contests and door prizes.
The opening of Lovshak adds competition to the local calzone market, with D.P. Dough. 244 West Gilman St., having its grand opening earlier this month.
I think it will raise awareness about the calzone. We're not threatened by them, we wish them the best,"" said Brian Plotkin owner of the Madison and Champaign, Ill. D.P. Dough restaurants.
Plotkin also added that D.P. Dough is an established business with locations on 20 college campuses.
The current record for the largest calzone was set by the Lovshack restaurant in LaFayette, Ind., near the Purdue Campus.
""It's bull that they're trying to break the record,"" said Mike Paolicchi, a senior at Purdue and Lovshack customer. ""Purdue will always hold the record in my heart. We'll get it back. One calzone at a time.""
The Lovshack restaurant on the Purdue campus is a hot spot for students, according to Paolicchi. He said the restaurant gives unique names to its menu items. ""My favorite is the 'Oh God! Yes, Yes!'"" Paolicchi said.
