Several UW-Madison student organizations had eligibility hearings to receive funding from the Student Services Finance Committee at Memorial Union Monday.
Groups up for eligibility included the Jewish Cultural Collective, Promoting Racial and Ethnic Awareness and the Roman Catholic Foundation. UW-Madison, which recently filed a lawsuit against the university over alleged funding violations for its 2007-'08 budget.
Beth Czarnecki and Craig Griffie spoke on behalf of RCF-UWM, presenting why it should be eligible to receive funding through the General Students Services Funds for the 2008-'09 academic year.
According to the representatives, the goal of RCF-UWM is to pass along a Catholic perspective of helping the needy and caring for the sick, while encouraging them to develop leadership skills.
The group plans to use their funding, if awarded, to hold mini-course lectures on natural family planning and theories of forgiveness. Additionally, the group invites guest speakers, professors and students at UW-Madison to provide and help students to be conscious of Catholic values.
RCF-UWM also plan to use their funding to host music bands to play before or after lectures.
We will be able to provide meetings, but we would not be able to bring guest speakers without funding,"" said Czarnecki, a RCF-UWM chief administrator.
Each year 15 to 20 UW-Madison students benefit from GSSF funding, according to the group.
""We are pretty confident that we will be eligible for GSSF,"" Czarnecki said after the presentation.
The eligibility decision will be reported at the SSFC meeting Sept. 20.
