Hot charcoal ashes from a grill are the suspected cause of a fire early Sunday morning that caused more than $500,000 in damages to apartment buildings and Pincus McBride Market and Deli on 301 N. Hamilton St.
According to the Madison Fire Department, embers from the grill dropped down onto the roof of the deli. They also suspect fireworks were thrown onto the grill at the time of the incident and recovered more than 20 packages of Black Cat fireworks.
The MFD reported flames reaching 20 feet in the air. No one suffered injury and 14 people were displaced as a result of the fire damages.
Power was shut down to much of the region, but the area regained electricity after the blaze was suffocated, said the MFD. The deli suffered the bulk of the reported $500,000 in damages and is allowed to re-open once it passes approval from the Madison Health Department.
