Elliott leads women’s golf at Burning Classic

The Wisconsin women's golf team showed youthful promise at the Susie Maxwell Burning Classic this weekend in Norman, Okla., finishing in 12th place.

The Badgers golfed consistently over the span of the entire three-day tournament. With daily team scores of 305, 298, and 307, their total score of 910 put them six strokes behind the 11th-place University of Texas-El Paso, and three in front of the New Mexico State Aggies.

Leading the Badgers was junior Katie Elliott, who shot a team-low 223 in the three-day competition. Elliott, a Madison native, shot a 1-over-par round of 73 Monday to finish in 22nd place.

Sophomore Isabel Alvarez used a record-setting second day score of 66 to claim an eleventh-place standing after two days of competition. Alvarez faded on day three, shooting a 79 and finishing in 29th place. Alvarez's series of 79-66-79 was a career-best for the Gijon, Spain, native. Her previous mark was 229 at the Mountain View Collegiate competition in Tucson, Ariz

Freshman Kelsey Verbelen finished 3 strokes behind Alvarez with a 227, good enough for 46th place. The Green Bay native's series of 75-77-75 was a career best in 54 holes of competition.

Baylor University captured the team championship crown after shooting an impressive 4-under series of 860. The University of Arkansas finished a close second shooting an 869, and the Mustangs from Southern Methodist University claimed third.
