Strong finish leaves UW with 4th-place

The University of Wisconsin men's golf team played its best golf Tuesday to finish fourth in the final round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,092-yard Pinehurst No. 8 in Pinehurst, N.C.

After a slow start to the tournament, the Badgers improved with every round and finished the tournament strongly.

The Badgers, who were tied for seventh after Sunday's opening round, moved up to sixth place on Monday with a 10-over par 298. They bettered that score in the final round, shooting a 3-over par 291 to finish 26-over par with a total score of 890 (301-298-291).

Wisconsin's total score of 26-over par was enough to seal a fourth-place finish, behind Penn State, Michigan and the champions, Indiana University. The Hoosiers finished 10 strokes ahead of the Badgers with a total score of 880 (297-293-290).

The Badgers' newfound resurgence was largely due to the players who posted their lowest scores of the tournament on Tuesday.

Sophomore Dan Woltman ended the tournament as the Badgers' top individual golfer. The Beaver Dam, Wis. native was tied for 15th after the second round but a final round of one-under par propelled him to tie for seventh place in the individual rankings.

Woltman had finished day one in a tie for 17th but he upped his game during the next two rounds and finished the tournament with a three-over par 219 (74-74-71).

Junior Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.) started the day tied for 11th but shot a one-over par 74 to finish in a three-way tie for 10th place. His final score for the tournament was a four-over par 220 (75-72-73).

Also tied for 10th place was senior captain Garrett Jones (Rewey, Wis.). Jones shot an even-par 72 to climb into 10th place after initially starting the day ranked 15th. Jones also ended the day with a total four-over par 220 (73-75-72).

Sophomore Pat Duffy (Appleton, Wis.) was another player who climbed up the leader board. Duffy began the final round in a five way tie for 65th and shot a three-over par 75 to jump 11 places and end the tournament in 54th place. Duffy finished the tournament at 16-over par with a 232 (80-77-75).

Like Duffy, sophomore Tyler Obermueller also began the day at 65th. He too shot a final round of three-over par 75 Tuesday to join Duffy in a tie for 54th place. His final round score put Obermueller at 16-over par for the tournament with a 232 (79-78-75).

Indiana's Jorge Campillo, who began the day in first place, finished as the individual champion. Campillo was three-under par for the tournament with a 213 (73-67-73).

The next stop for the Badgers is the two-day Purdue Boilermaker Invitational on April 7 in West Lafayette, Ind. Three tournaments remain before the Big Ten Championships.
