MPD arrests bank robber in stakeout

Over the weekend Madison Police arrested the man who robbed a local Amcore Bank last Wednesday.

MPD was first notified Wednesday that a white male dressed in blue jeans and a gray hooded sweatshirt, entered Amcore Bank on 3003 E. Washington Ave., flashed a weapon to the teller and robbed the bank, located just steps off Capitol Square.

Police released surveillance photos captured inside the bank and later gathered information on the suspect, who turned out to be Christopher Coster, a 34-year-old Madison resident.

On Thursday, police located the suspect's vehicle at a residence on East Washington Avenue. Police set up outside around the perimeter of the house and made numerous attempts to make contact with the suspect, who they believed was inside, according to a police release.

After no response, police assembled a response team. They entered Coster's front door, took him into custody and transported him to Dane County Jail.

Police are especially attributing the success of Coster's arrest to the quality of the Amcore Bank surveillance photos. They said after recent bank robberies, MPD asked area banks to alter the angle of the cameras and upgrade the quality.

MPD's request was successful in this case. Amcore titled its cameras, and as a result, a full body shot of Coster was available. Police said this helped to successfully identify him.

Amcore Bank spokesperson Katherine Taylor said Wednesday's heist at the Amcore Bank on East Washington Avenue was not the first time it had been robbed.
