Woman fights off mugger near Capitol Square

Madison police are searching for a male suspect who tackled a female to the ground in an attempted strong-armed robbery near Capitol Square this past weekend.

The 25-year-old victim, of Madison, told police a man followed her as she crossed Gorham Street and entered the 400 block of North Butler Street. The suspect reportedly continued to lurk behind the victim, until he finally tackled her into a snow bank.

According to police, the suspect demanded money, but the victim was able to fight back. She did not lose any of her belongings, nor did she suffer any injury. After the brief struggle, the man reportedly fled on foot empty handed.

The suspect is described as a 6-foot-tall black male. At the time of the attempted robbery, he was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants. Police said this remains an open case.
