Snow and sleet to frost over, shower on Madison this weekend

Local meteorologists are forecasting a major winter weather system will enter Wisconsin Friday and pound the Madison area with snow, freezing rain and sleet all weekend.

According to Gary Cannalte, chief meteorologist for WISC-TV 3, it is likely to be one of the more significant storms Madison has seen this winter.

""No matter which direction you go from here, there will be pretty nasty weather,"" Cannalte said. ""The farther north you go, there could be anywhere from a foot to a foot-and-a-half of snow.""

The snow, according to The Weather Channel, will begin late Friday evening and continue through the weekend with accumulations up to 10 inches in Madison.

""During the first part of the day on Saturday, the precipitation is likely to change to sleet or freezing rain, and maybe rain depending on what the temperatures are,"" Cannalte said, and added that, ""with freezing rain you may run the risk of power failures.""

In addition, he said the varying temperatures could cause Madison to see rain, snow and sleet all within a 24-hour time span.

""There may even be the possibility of local flooding if we see more rain,"" Cannalte said.
