After much speculation that he would jump to the NFL, offensive coordinator Paul Chryst will remain with the UW football team, head coach Bret Bielema announced Wednesday.
Chryst interviewed with the Dallas Cowboys and was rumored as a possibility for a position with the San Diego Chargers before it was announced the offensive staff there would remain intact. Last week, UW put a plan together to keep Chryst and the assistant coach elected to stay in Madison to run the offense for a third straight season.
""I'm very pleased Paul will be staying with our program,"" Bielema said in a statement. ""It's a testament to all he has done here that an organization like the Cowboys would be interested in him. Our offense has progressed under his direction the past two seasons and both Paul and I are looking forward to more of the same in 2007.""
Chryst's 2005 offense set UW records for points scored in a season (446) and points per game (34.3). After losing every starting receiver and five players who were drafted, Chryst put together an attack in 2006 that included eight new starters. The offense hardly missed a beat as Wisconsin went on to a school record 12 wins.
