Victim of attack near Camp Randall dies, suspect in custody

Police say Mark A. Tiggelaar, 62, died from injuries after the Sept. 20 attack; suspect Keith A. Jones remains in custody.

The victim of an aggravated assault behind Camp Randall died Thursday due to the injuries sustained in the Sept. 20 attack.

The victim, identified as Mark A. Tiggelaar, 62, died of homicidal blunt force trauma, according to an update from the University of Wisconsin Police Department (UWPD). The Dane County’s Medical Examiner’s Office completed an autopsy Saturday.

The suspect, Keith A. Jones, remains in custody at the Dane County Jail. UWPD has referred charges of first degree murder to the Dane County District Attorney's Office.

The aggravated assault occurred around 2 a.m. in the parking lot behind Camp Randall. The unprovoked attack appeared to be targeted, and Tiggelaar was transported to a hospital with critical injuries.

Jones fled the scene but was taken into custody later that day. He initially faced possible charges of aggravated battery with an intent to cause great bodily harm, robbery and a probation violation.

UWPD is still investigating the case, but indicated there are no direct threats to campus.
