Student shot after physical altercation on Langdon street

Following an altercation outside of a fraternity house Friday night, a student was treated for wounds related to a gunshot.

A student was shot following a large physical altercation on Langdon St. Friday night. A BadgerSAFE alert was sent at 11:24 p.m. warning students to shelter in place if in the area, and avoid it if not.

Videos obtained by The Daily Cardinal show a large physical fight outside the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house at 221 Langdon St., with one member of the altercation pulling out a gun and firing it. The 18-year-old victim was transported to a local hospital, treated and released and a second victim sustained only minor injuries.

Multiple suspects fled after the altercation, and officers took an 18-year-old suspect, who is not affiliated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, into custody nearby. An all-clear was issued at 12:09 a.m.

“This incident does highlight the overall increase of violence that UW Madison students have experienced over the past couple of years,” the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity said in a statement shared to Instagram. “Let’s do our part to keep our wonderful college town safe.”

Madison saw an 8% decrease in violent crime last year, then-chief of police at MPD Shon Barnes said in January.

The Madison Police Department and UWPD are asking those who have any information or video footage of the incident to contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers by phone at 608-266-6014 or online at p3tips.com. MPD said information may be shared anonymously and could be eligible for monetary reward if it leads to an arrest.

UW-Madison is offering resources and support to students who may have been affected by this incident.
