UW sweeps North Dakota

The Wisconsin women's hockey team continued their dominant play this weekend with a two-game sweep at lowly North Dakota. 

 

Sophomore goalie Jessie Vetter saw just seven shots as the Badgers shut out the Fighting Sioux 5-0 Friday. 

 

After a scoreless first period, sophomore forward Erika Lawler opened the scoring in the second period with a wrist shot that beat Sioux freshman goalie Brittany Kirkham.  

 

Junior forward Jinelle Zaugg scored her 18th goal of the season at 12:13 of the middle period to give Wisconsin a 2-0 advantage. 

 

Freshman forward Meghan Duggan put the Badgers up 3-0 with a power-play goal in the third period as she knocked in a rebound from a Bobbi-Jo Slusar shot for her 17th goal of the season. 

 

Wisconsin's fourth goal came from senior forward Heidi Kletzien, as she was found wide open by sophomore forward Kayla Hagen in front of the net.

A minute later, junior defenseman Meghan Mikkelson finished the Badger scoring with a power-play goal 15:10 into the final period.  

 

Vetter went untested throughout the game as she effortlessly improved her record to 12-1-2 on the season. In two games against the Fighting Sioux this season, Vetter saw just 12 shots.  

 

Senior goalie Christine Dufour had a tougher challenge Saturday, seeing 21 shots. Dufour and her Wisconsin teammates were up to the task, however, as they extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games, winning 6-1. 

 

The Badgers needed a come-from-behind effort as North Dakota freshman defender Ashley Lynch put the UND up 1-0 in the first period.  

 

Wisconsin retaliated with a Slusar power-play goal from the point, tying the score at 1-1 late in the first period. 

 

Senior forward and assistant captain Sara Bauer gave the Badgers the lead for good n the second period. 

 

Lawler, Slusar, sophomore forward Tia Hanson and freshman forward Emily Kranz followed with goals to give the Badgers the 6-1 win. 

 

The Badgers host Minnesota State next weekend.
