Women’s hockey skates to two ties with SCS

Unable to hold two leads against St. Cloud State, the Wisconsin women's hockey team skated to a pair of ties this weekend against the Huskies.

In game one, Wisconsin jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the second period when senior forward Phoebe Monteleone knocked a rebound in for the lead.

St. Cloud State tied the game later in the second when senior defenseman Laura Fast intercepted a pass in the Badger zone and beat sophomore goalie Jessie Vetter to knot it up at one.

With 14 seconds left in the second period, freshman forward Holly Roberts gave the Huskies the lead, beating Vetter from the point for the 2-1 lead.

Freshman forward Kyla Sanders scored the last goal of the game 8:46 into the third period, deflecting a shot by junior defenseman Meghan Mikkelson past St. Cloud State junior goalie Kendall Newell for the 2-2 tie.

Newall saw 38 shots from the Badgers, stopping 36 of them in the tying effort. In October, Newall proved herself a solid goaltender, stopping 41 Wisconsin shots in a 2-1 overtime loss against the Badgers.

Vetter made 18 saves on 20 shots, putting her record at 9-1-2.

In the second game, the Badgers had a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the third period. However, they were not able to hold the lead, with freshman forward Caitlin Hogan delivering the final blow with 14 seconds left in regulation, tying the game up at three.

This game saw senior goalie Christine Dufour get the start in net for Wisconsin.

Freshman forward Meghan Duggan put Wisconsin up 1-0 in the first, taking a feed from junior forward Jinelle Zaugg in the slot and beating Newell for her 13th goal of the season.

Senior forward Sara Bauer gave Wisconsin a 2-0 cushion, winning a faceoff in the offensive zone and beating Newell for her 11th goal of the season.

The game seemed to be in Wisconsin's hands when senior defenseman Bobbi-Jo Slusar scored from the point to give Wisconsin a 3-0 lead midway through the second period.

St. Cloud State's rally began when junior forward Marie-Michel Lemieux scored for the Huskies, ending Dufour's shutout streak at 186:38.

Freshman forward Meaghan Pezon made it a 3-2 game with seven minutes to go in the third, beating Dufour from the right circle.

With 14 seconds left in regulation, Hogan tied it up for good as St. Cloud State had pulled their goalie for the extra attacker.

The Badgers are off until they travel to Minneapolis for a two game series with Minnesota Jan. 5.
