The women's hockey team's unbeaten streak of 26 games, a program record, was broken last weekend against Minnesota-Duluth. This weekend, another UW record fell as senior forward Sara Bauer became the school's all-time leading points scorer.
In the second game of Wisconsin's combined 15-0 sweep of Robert Morris in Pittsburgh, Bauer beat the Colonials' sophomore goalie Brianne McLaughlin for career point No. 178.
Friday night, seven different Badgers scored goals en route to a 10-0 victory. Freshmen forwards Kyla Sanders and Emily Kranz each had two goals for Wisconsin, while Bauer also had a pair.
Junior forward Meghan Mikkelson began the 10-goal march in the first period, putting a rebound from a Meghan Duggan shot past McLaughlin. Mikkelson contributed to the second goal in the first, as her shot from the point crashed into traffic and Sanders gained control of the puck in front of the net and put Wisconsin up by two.
Bauer inched closer to 178 after the Sanders goal, giving the Badgers a 3-0 lead. Later, sophomore forward Angie Keseley gave Wisconsin a relaxing 4-0 lead with 10 seconds left in the first period.
This season's theme of frequent freshmen contributions continued in the second period when Kranz gave Wisconsin a 5-0 cushion, her first collegiate goal. Her second goal came late in the third period, Wisconsin's final tally of the night.
In the third period, Bauer tied UW's career point record held by former Badger Meghan Hunter, assisting on senior defender and captain Bobbi-Jo Slusar's goal.
Duggan also scored for Wisconsin in the third period, helping to give Wisconsin its largest margin of victory since it beat Wayne State 11-0 in the 2004-‘05 campaign.
Sophomore goalie Jessie Vetter made 11 saves for the Badgers, as she improved to 9-1-1 on the season and 20-2-1 over her young career, including last year's historic postseason.
Wisconsin's senior goalie Christine Dufour saw action Saturday night, as the Badgers routed Robert Morris 5-0.
Sanders ignited the offense in the first period, scoring a similar goal to her first one from Friday night, corralling a Mikkelson shot from the point to give Wisconsin a 1-0 lead.
Bauer's record-setter at 15:17 into the first gave the Badgers a 2-0 advantage. Wisconsin scored three times in the third to remove any chance the Colonials had of coming back.
Duggan, junior forward Jinelle Zaugg and freshman forward Jasmine Giles all notched third-period goals for the Badgers as they finished off the sweep of Robert Morris.
In net, Dufour saw just 9 shots, as Robert Morris was able to generate shots on net just 20 times in the 120 minutes of play this weekend. Dufour is now 7-0-0 on the season.
The Badgers returns to conference play this weekend as they head to St. Cloud State for a two game series against the Huskies on Friday and Saturday.
