UW shocked by Highlanders

The University of California-Riverside (2-4) triumphed at home as they gave the undefeated Wisconsin women's basketball team (6-1) their first loss of the season 52â_50.

The Badgers' offense was not enough to break down the Highlander defense, as they shot 35.7 percent from the field. Wisconsin junior forward Danielle Ward was the only Badger to score in double digits, with 10 points, and she also posted her first double-double of the season by pulling down 11 rebounds.

In addition, the game marked the end of junior guard Jolene Anderson's 35-game double-figure scoring streak, as she finished the game with only five points on a rough 2-of-15 shooting.

With 1:40 left in the game, Wisconsin had its first opportunity to pull ahead of the Highlanders. Anderson missed a shot that was rebounded by UC-Riverside, and a foul by Badger junior guard Janese Banks sent the Highlanders to the free-throw line.

Kemie Nkele of UC-Riverside made both of her free throws, allowing the Badgers one last shot with seven seconds left on the clock. Wisconsin freshman guard Teah Gant attempted to tie the score, but her shot was blocked.

Neither team was dominant as they combined for 41 turnovers. UC-Riverside sophomore forward Roney Friend led all scorers with 14 points.
