Mind Your Morsels with the UW Dietetics and Nutrition Club

Q: After Halloween weekend and weeks of home football games, I have felt a severe lack of energy. I assume this is from all the festivities, but how can I help my body recover?

A: There is a build up of toxins in your body resulting from the digestion of alcohol and overly processed foods. Drinking a few servings of 100-percent cranberry juice throughout the day can help detoxify your body in a non-aggressive way and rid yourself of these harmful toxins.

Also, consider taking a green tea supplement for the next few days. Green tea is a very strong antioxidant used for centuries in Eastern cultures to cleanse the body. Be conscious to follow the directions and serving size, so you do not ingest too many milligrams—there is a significant quantity of caffeine in most servings.

According to studies in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, coffee is also a strong antioxidant. Black coffee is packed with compounds to battle in your favor for optimal recovery.

However, the best and most effective way to have your body running in peak condition is to learn to treat it better by avoiding consecutive, unhealthy habits.
