Doyle aide to begin 18-month prison stint in minimum security Illinois camp

A former aide to Gov. Jim Doyle will begin her 18-month prison sentence today in a minimum security facility in Illinois, according to WKOW television.

Georgia Thompson was convicted on two felony counts July 12 for her role in steering a $750,000 federal contract to Adelman Travel Group, who later donated $20,000 to Doyle's re-election campaign.

Thompson was a purchasing division supervisor with the state Department of Administration. She was charged with federal counts of causing misapplication of funds and participating in a scheme to defraud the State of Wisconsin of the right to honest services. No other officials were charged.

The Adelman case was a centerpiece of ex-Rep. Mark Green's campaign against Doyle for governor.

Thompson will serve her sentence at Pekin prison camp near Peoria.
