UW-Madison emeritus professor of educational leadership, one of the primary constructors of the Peace Corps and former Dean of Student Affairs Joseph Kauffman died of cancer Friday at age 84.
Kauffman was Dean of Student Affairs during the anti-war student demonstrations of the 1960's, and counseled several UW-Madison chancellors as well as other universities' top administrators. He also served as executive vice president for the UW System from 1980-'83.
He served as the Peace Corps' first director of training from 1961-'63, after pushing for a national youth corps when he was an academic consultant to various national organizations during John F. Kennedy's 1960 presidential campaign.
""Joe was an idealist and innovative thinker who was well ahead of his time in understanding the educational power of service learning,"" Chancellor John Wiley told University Communications.
