Soccer game ends with a broken jaw

A soccer game on Madison's southwest side turned ugly Saturday, and one man now faces battery charges for his role in an on-field fight.

According to the Madison Police Department, a group of adults were playing at Elver Park, 1232 McKenna Blvd., at 6 p.m. when an alleged bad call brought tensions to a boiling point. As one of the players argued the call, several fans became involved and a scuffle ensued.

Fans quickly spilled onto the soccer field, leaving players and other bystanders to restore order. However, before the arguing factions could be separated Hector Portillo-Velasco allegedly punched one of the players in the face, breaking his jaw and sending him to a nearby hospital.

Portillo-Velasco, 33, was a fan at the game and lives in Mazomanie. He was taken to Dane County Jail immediately following the soccer game fracas.
