This election season, one man is determined to make Grant County like TV-land's Mayberry by legally changing his name to Andy Griffith and running for county sheriff.
Griffith, formerly known as William Fenrick, is a music store owner in Platteville, Wis.. He filed for a name change in May, with intentions to run for county sheriff as an independent, according to WISC-TV.
He selected the name because he believes the TV sheriff has an honest and straightforward image. Ultimately, Griffith said, he hopes this will get residents to pay closer attention to the race.
Some residents said the name might be a cheap gimmick and other candidates are skeptical the name change will seriously effect the race.
Democratic sheriff candidate Doug Vespermen said, ""If I felt that changing my name would help me in the race, I would have changed mine to Kenny Rogers. But you haven't heard me sing.""
