Woltman takes first overall, team takes fifth

Wisconsin sophomore Dan Woltman had a strong final round Tuesday morning, shooting a 67 and finishing first overall in the two day VCU/Mattaponi Springs Shootout at Mattaponi Springs Golf Club in Ruther Glen, Va. Wisconsin, as a team, finished fifth overall out of 15 competing universities from around the country.

The 54-hole tournament consisted of three 18-hole rounds. Woltman, who led both of the first two rounds with a 65 and 70, held on Monday, Sept. 25, finished the day tied for first place with Kent State's Marc Bourgeois. Both men had a total score of 135, nine under par, coming into the final round Tuesday morning.

Woltman shot a 67 in the final round, giving him a total score of 202 and a first place finish, just three stokes ahead of Bourgeois who finished in second place with a 205. This gave Woltman his first win in a collegiate tournament and the second lowest 54-hole score in Wisconsin history, just two strokes more than Wisconsin alumnus Ben Walter, who shot a 200 (65-65-70) at the 1994 Big Ten Championships.

Another top-10 finisher, Wisconsin senior Garrett Jones, placed eighth by shooting six-under par and a total score of 210 (71-69-70). This tied his best season individual total. Jones was nine under par with four holes to play but suffered through a triple bogey on the 15th hole.

Wisconsin junior Jeff Kaiser finished tied for 30th place with a 220 (72-73-75), and sophomore Tyler Obermueller shot a 226 (78-74-74) and tied for 51st place. Sophomore Patrick Duffy rounded off the Wisconsin scores by tying for 62nd place after accumulating a score of 229 (79-73-77). There were a total of 78 golfers who individually competed in this tournament.

With a team total of 857, seven under par, Wisconsin finished in fifth place, ending their two-tournament winning streak. Placing ahead of Wisconsin was Penn State University and the University of Louisville, both finishing tied for first with a team total of 851, thirteen under par. Charlotte took third place scoring 853 and Indiana University finished in fourth with 854.
