Touting UW-Madison's biomedical research as one of the leading research programs in the nation, U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, called for further increases in the National Institutes of Health funding Wednesday.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee held a full meeting to consider reauthorization of NIH, a bill that would provide NIH funding for three more years at a five percent increase in funding.
Baldwin declared the five percent increase was not enough, given UW-Madison's recent protein and virus advancements and WiCell Research Institute's acquisition of two new stem cell lines and collaboration with California to produce stem cells that do not destroy human embryos.
""The biomedical and behavioral research that's conducted at or coordinated by the NIH is of great importance to all of America, and especially to my district, which includes the University of Wisconsin-Madison—one of the nation's leading research institutions,"" Baldwin said at the meeting.
